Safe Kids is a collaboration with the Health Department of Marion County. It focuses on strategies to reduce both death and injuries from those occurrences that statistics show pose the greatest threat to our children and youth.
Around the world, a child dies from and unintentional injury every 30 seconds, and millions of children are injured in ways that can affect them for a lifetime.
Preventable accidents are the number one killer of children 17 years of age and younger.
1 Drowning Prevention - Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional injury-related deaths for children ages one to four.
2. SIDS and Co-Sleeping Prevention - Many SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) cases are later determined to be death by suffocation. An unsafe sleep environment for infants, including co-sleeping, can cause suffocation.
3. Car Seats Pedestrian and Bike Safety - Car and truck crashes are the leading cause of unintentional injury-related deaths, followed by pedestrian injury and drowning among children ages 5 to 14.
